The bony fish faunafrom the southern Australian Paleocene to Pliocene is being reconstructed from otoliths. Most data, however, are from Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene. 56 species are described, 21 of which are new and 10 are placed in open nomenclature. Previous studies in the area are being revised with the descriptions.
Emphazis is pointed to the importance of the opening of the strait of Tasmania during Late Eocene and its effects as to the migration of mesopelagic and shelf fishes. In the Upper Eocene southern Australia and New Zealand represent quite different faunistic provinces, but during Oligo-Miocene an increasing number of species can be traced across the Tasman Sea.
